The incident took place around 5:23 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, after City of Newburgh officers responded to an address on Benkard Avenue for a domestic dispute, said City of New Police Det. Lt. Joseph Burns.
Once on the scene, officers separated a man and woman fighting and during the investigation determined that no crime had been committed.
The woman, Odarly Rodriguez-Reyes, 23, of Newburgh, became upset and began to leave the area towards a motor vehicle, Burns said.
After getting into the vehicle and staring the engine, the officers attempted to stop her from driving away, as during the initial investigation she had appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, Burns added.
But instead of stopping, Rodriguez-Reyes pulled away from the curb and began to drive towards the officers, who were forced to jump out of the way to avoid being struck, Burns said.
Officers then pursued the vehicle into Cornwall where the vehicle rear-ended another motor vehicle on Route 9W south of the hospital. Rodriguez-Reyes was then taken into custody and transported to St. Luke’s Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
The other motorist was also transported to the hospital for evaluation and treatment.
Rodrguez-Reyes was charged assault, reckless endangerment, DWI, and driving without a license.
She was held pending arraignment in City of Newburgh court on Monday, Feb. 4.
